BECAUSE IT’S IMPORTANT & BECAUSE THE RIVERSIDE FARMERS’ MARKET TOLD YOU TO
I headed down the stairs to the church basement at 7am to find “a small but mighty empire” otherwise known as Chocolate Twist. Headquartered in Riverside, Chocolate Twist is ruled by Riverside resident, Kate Coffey, AKA The Queen. A farmers’ market vendor and favorite, Kate is creating a candy empire that started with caramels and a dream. Kate now has a staff of two, many corporate clients, available in thirty or so retail stores (including Riverside Foods), and still personally attends farmers’ and other markets. She’s been featured in Food 52, Oprah’s newsletter, Uncommon Goods, Chicago Magazine, Self Magazine, Sun Times Splash , Chicagoist and a few new ones coming out soon.
Kate starts the day with a huge mixing bowl of tea blended from her good friend Lori at SenTEAmental Moods, a former vendor at our market.
Always innovating, Kate has created many unique flavors of caramels beyond the traditional Epic Sea Salt such as Black Licorice, Pumpkin Spice, Orange Chipotle, Salted Cocoa, Beer and Pretzel, and Burnt Toast. She also has three flavors of caramel sauce so you can drizzle it on your choice of carriers whether it’s ice cream or a spoon and it’s by far better than anything commercially produced.
Kate, a graduate from Kendall College, uses her culinary genius to create some unique taste sensations that change throughout the year. I’m personally a huge fan of both the Mint Grapefruit Candy Bar and the Go Fudge Yourself.
Corporate Clients get the royal treatment since Kate will customize packaging or treats for any purpose. Hot Cocoa mixes make great gifts. Correction: Anything she makes is a great gift: candy bars, caramels, peanut butter cups, mallows, hot cocoa mix, caramel sauce.
Patty, Kate’s intern and Kate discuss the latest batch of Saigon Cinnamon Peanut Butter Cups.
The Riverside Farmers’ Market is so happy to have Kate bring her candy to the market but it’s available year round so you don’t have to wait until next June.
